About the Artwork

The process starts out with hoarding magazines and books that I collect through my digging quests. Luckily, I was able to visit my usual spots and gather a good amount before the lockdowns started. I try to pick out source materials with useful imagery, and ones that I can get for a good deal. Some make the cut, while others just end up in my book collection. After going through them and taking pages apart, I try to build up a strategy for the cutting process. I’ll take days of just cutting up pieces of paper while at the same time building ideas in my head. I pick out and group together certain images, shapes, spaces, and colors that go with the different styles and themes that I’ve come up with.
The rebuilding process begins after I clear out my head and the mess from my working table. Led by a style and theme, I try to create obscure forms with the cut-out pieces, taking into consideration colors, shapes, and flow. Making each piece feels like building a puzzle without an actual image as a guide and end. When I’m satisfied with a piece, I go on with the glueing process. Finally, I make sure to scan and digitize each piece.
The goal is to squeeze out as many ideas. Hoard, deconstruct, strategize, reconstruct, eat, sleep, repeat.
About the Artist
I am self taught when it comes to design, art, and making beats. Without proper formal education, I learned (and am still learning) most of what I know and do from studying other artists, peers, experimentation, and the internet. I slowly built up skills by making things for myself and other people and ended up making a career creating designs for local hip-hop circles and small businesses. I also got into a few group exhibits in the past, and currently trying to learn and create more things.
About the Collection
The artwork is part of SALOOB(I/A)N, an art collection in collaboration with i&i Mag.
i&i is a platform that aims to create a shared space for dialogue and collaboration between the local scientific and artistic communities, stemming from its founders’ desire to support and promote the advancement of STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, Math) education in the Philippines.
