    About the Artwork

The Northern Japanese island of Hokkaido has abundant natural forests, clear lakes and magnificent mountains. It is perhaps best known for its intense and brutal winters. Snow and ice make many parts of the island inaccessible and the local Sea of Okhotsk routinely freezes over.

ARTIST STATEMENT – Like a majority of people, I take photographs to preserve memories of times spent with my family and friends as well as the places I’ve been. I use whatever camera I could afford to use. Currently, I mostly use either my medium format film or my 35mm film camera loaded with kodak rolls. I like the limitations those cameras impose on me because it forces me to be more creative in the way I shoot and communicate what I see. I see the world in full vivid color, but I wish to create expressive images in black and white because it distills the expression down to how you compose the elements in your frame and the technique used in taking the image.
