“Harapan”

Self-awareness often has a crucial accompaniment; a quiet disposition.

In ‘harapan’, Eugene Dominguez is in the mode of pondering the weight of this state. Gazes loaded with visions for the future occupy most of his pictures. His intention may somehow be vague at the moment, only because of his admittance that he is still at the precipice of where he is currently heading towards. The collection of works are intimate depiction of his life in the space he currently occupies. Often in quiet contemplation, his gestured self-portraits are manifestations of what he recounts as ‘momentary pauses’, a glimpse of what Dominguez’s inner world looks like. In his compositions, one can see that the tone he sets in terms of how he positions himself in relation to the room is one of a quiet building of resolve to go outside, a metaphor on facing head-on whatever it is that he will eventually see as he ventures further in his journey.

He selected a choice set of items, all within his vicinity, as symbols of the personal narratives directly affecting his day-to-day experiences. The lone hollow block placed on a table is an image he alludes to a wall that separates him from the outside which he considers the next great frontier for him to explore, he mentions that this is one of the things that he can fully grasp, acting both as a blockade and a potential building block for his future endeavors. The glass filled with water opens up a room for reflection, meditating on a single image often gives unexpected realizations. The door of his apartment, fully opened, revealing a portion of the sky points toward what he yearns for, that which is beyond the confines of his safe space.

Dominguez also give us a peek of what he envisions the great outdoors offers. In a very quaint and solemn piece of landscape overlooking a residential building, a picture of a distant future can be grasped. There is a sense of longing for something in his offering for ‘harapan’. Of what, it is yet to be made clear. But this is also something the artist wants us to ponder upon: when what we see in front of us takes up most of what we can comprehend, how do we move to make the most out of it?

About the artists.

Eugene Dominguez

Eugene Dominguez (b.1996) was a full-time Filipino artist at a young age. His works tackle the idea of “sleep”. He was inspired by the beauty of sleeping and the things he used.

Regardless of how other people think of it, he always comes up with another idea. Besides other arts inspiration, he often uses his own persona by subjecting himself to his art. For him, being a visual person. He always appreciates his surrounding and uses them to make art. Eugene Dominguez takes his immediate surroundings as a force and inspiration behind his paintings.

After earning a degree in fine arts, Eugene Dominguez moved on to create his own art that explores interpersonal interactions. It portrays people and their surroundings’ reality. The message of peace and rest is conveyed through
Dominguez’s paintings. His art was influenced by the rhythm of his surroundings, and he used oil paint from the start to make the paintings more realistic. Eugene Dominguez was also a part of the KUTA Artist Group and belonged to the University of Rizal System. Additionally, he is one of the finalists at the national level for Metrobank Art and Design Excellence.
