Modeka Art is pleased to welcome a solo exhibition by Gabby Prado entitled “Lexikon”, featuring 10 paintings and a performance choreographed by the artist, demonstrating her experience living with synesthesia.
Derived from the Greek definition “to perceive together”, synesthesia is a rare neurological condition wherein stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway simultaneously leads to the stimulation of other sensory or cognitive pathways. This means that synesthetes (individuals who have synesthesia) can smell, hear, taste, or feel pain in color while others can taste shapes or perceive written letters and digits in color. Chromesthesia, a form of synesthesia in which sound involuntarily evokes an experience of color, is the condition Prado has lived with all her life.
Her canvas paintings for “Lexikon” are a selection of abstract works, each of which serve as a visual narration based on not just her synesthetic experiences, but the story of her life as well. The colors blue and orange / brown can be seen in most of her paintings as these colors represent hard work and curiosity. Prado conveys the lessons learned from failure and overcoming challenges to pursue her passions through her paintings.
Aside from her career as a painter, Prado is also trained as a performer, specifically in dancing. A first for the artist, Prado creates a link between her visual experience to a physical one by way of performance. “Lexikon” is an assemblage of the artist’s experiences living with Chromesthesia. Through her paintings and performance, Prado opens a door for one to come into familiarity with her world of sound and colors.
Lexikon is on view from February 27, 2021 – March 20, 2021.
