The show revolves around the exploration of inner lives—the artists’ inner lives. But this semi-autobiographical approach to creating art is anchored not in memories or personal experiences, but in the actual living spaces or studios of the artists themselves. It is an exploration of their lives as occupants of the world they are most familiar with: their home—or parts of their homes or studios.

The intent is to achieve something novel out of this: either a new visual experience or a new process for conceptualizing a painting. And for the viewer—to experience something more personal, intimate, and homely—amidst the gamut of other images and multi-sensorial experiences within the context of the fair. The objective, as in most autobiographies, is to flesh out something that is close and dear to the artist by carefully considering their relationship with the spaces they occupy: their bedrooms, their living rooms, their kitchen, or a part of their office or studio.

The approach in hoping to achieve this immersive, domestic odyssey is quite simple: ask the artist to choose a favorite spot or section of their home. It could be a part of the kitchen or the bedroom (in further discussions, different parts may be assigned to make the show more dynamic)—it could be a wall or window that they stare into first thing in the morning, or maybe that old chair or couch they have spent hours sitting in while contemplating new ideas. It could be the veranda overlooking the mountainscape. Wherever that spot is, the challenge is to make a painting (or sculpture or assemblage, etc.) that the artist herself would like to hang or place in that same spot; a painting or artwork they would like to see within that vicinity; their own painting or work they’d wish was also there. This could all be hypothetical, of course, or even rhetorical (considering they might already have their own favorite paintings hung). But the agenda is to somehow recreate that universe—when given the chance, in this present moment—to reimagine a new painting for that favorite spot that has accumulated more memories, more wisdom, more cobwebs throughout the years. And then the real challenge: to get it out from its interiors and share that painting with the world.
