ABOUT THE ARTIST
For three decades, Mijan Jumalon has intricately portrayed the female form on canvas, reflecting a profound exploration of femininity. However, a discernible shift has transpired—a deliberate departure from the exclusive focus on feminine figures. In her recent series, BAGGAGE REVOLUTION(2022) and SALT CIRCLES(2023), Mijan crafts captivating landscapes, weaving crimson prairies and winding pathways dotted with figures gathered in poignant scenes, evoking a sense of the occult—a delicate journey between endings and beginnings.
In 2019, Mijan started making films. Her documentary, MAGLABAY RA IN SAKIT, shines a spotlight on the resilience of a young rap musician in Zamboanga City, earning Mijan a well-deserved collection of awards. OLA(2020), her debut narrative short film, clinched the prestigious BEST SHORT FILM award at the 44th Gawad Urian in 2021.
Now in her new exhibit, THESE ARE THE HOURS(2024), Mijan delves into the corridors of time, probing moments intertwined with the intricate emotions of fear, sadness, and the transient nature of all we hold dear. Her art serves as a poignant catalyst for contemplation, urging us to take a stance as guardians of our own perceptions, acknowledging the impermanence that intricately shapes the essence of our collective humanity.
