Aze Ong

Spontaneity, intuition and impulses are integral parts of Aze’s process – rooted in her discoveries having lived with the indigenous people belonging to the Talaandig tribe. This leads to an intended ambiguity regarding meanings and themes that encourages debate and individual appreciation.

What are the usual themes in your work?
Liwanag is the underlying narrative for enlightenment.

Tell us about your latest project/s or anything you are currently working on.
I am currently working on my Queen project, a “Rolling Sculpture” that I walk within the streets ascertaining the boundary between the self and the artwork.

How do you study or research for a project?
Intuitive, process-oriented, experiential, flow.

What are the processes involved in your art-making?

When working for an exhibition, how do you know which work to include?
I guess depending on the theme?

Among your works, which of them could be called your favorites?
It would be like asking who is my favorite child, I will have to refuse to answer.

What is your fondest childhood memory?
Playing “bahay-bahayan” using fabric scraps, threads, umbrellas and stuffed toys in our garage turned sewing space for my Mom’s start-up garments business.
