Artist Focus:

Ciane Xavier

The lonely and desolate characters of Ciane Xavier’s work serve as exploration of the human soul, symbolizing power, fragility, and eternity but retaining a sense of vagueness to encourage a dialogue between the art and the viewer.

What are the usual themes in your work?

My main theme its Identity Loss, my work is personal and they are a reconstruction of my self on it, I use pop culture to explore the boundaries of today’s society.

Tell us about your latest project/s or anything you are currently working on.

My latest project was for Art Fair Ph 2020.

How do you study or research for a project?

I begin by looking at the world around me —strangers, friends, family, and even my self. From this, I start a digital rendering of my works, be it in the form of a photograph or a model, and from there begins crafting it to actualization. My experimental methods have pushed me to work not only within a time constraint but also in a spontaneous whiff of inspiration. From crazy moments to well-thought-of memories, I draw inspirations from the most abstract to the most personal circumstances I been through.

What are the processes involved in your art-making?

Digital rendering, 3D printing, cleaning process, molding, casting, painting and voila 🤙

When working for an exhibition, how do you know which work to include?

sometimes I already know what I want for the exact exhibit, other times if I am working on numerous shows at the same time I just group them as I go

Name some of the artists who have influenced you in your practice.
Mark Ryden, Choi Xoo, Mu Boyan.

Among your works, which of them could be called your favorites?

Queen of no Hearts.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

I have a memory of when I was 2 years old: I remember it so vividly, I run to meet my dad when he was coming home from work. And playing with my cousin on the bamboo tree or digging holes on the ground to find special rocks.
