Gerardo "Gerry" Tan

Gerardo Tan’s works deals with issues of representation and conceptual plays. He recreates images culled from the world of art and mass media using a variety of mediums in order to subvert hierarchies and give way to new itinerant meanings.

BIOGRAPHY

GERARDO TAN (Filipino, born 1960) works across media from painting, collage and artist books to video and found objects in room-sized installations.

His materials range from traditional ones like oil, acrylic to commonplace ones found like found photographs, dust, mirrors, and bundy clocks. Tan’s works deals with issues of representation and conceptual plays. He recreates images culled from the world of art and mass media using a variety of mediums in order to subvert hierarchies and give way to new itinerant meanings.

Gerardo Tan has been included in a number of important exhibitions like Bastards of Misrepresentation ( Frieis Museum Berlin, 2010), Pause (4th Gwanju Biennial, 2002), xs - XL Expanding Art (Sculpture Square, Singapore, 2002), Signs of Life (First Melbourne Biennial ,1999), Facts and Figures (Cultural Center of the Philippines, 1993) The 44th Western New York Exhibition (Albright Knox Gallery, 1992), Expose Yourself (Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, 1992), the 3rd Asian Art Biennial Bangladesh (Osmani Memorial Hall, Dhaka, 1986) and The 2nd Asian Art Show (Fukuoka Art Museum, 1982).

Among his solo exhibitions are Recent Diggings (Cultural Center of the Philippines, 1994), Index (Alliance Francaise Manila, 1995), Not A Trace (Finale Gallery, Manila, 1998), Mirror Painting (Finale Gallery, 2002), “This is not Gregor Schneider’s Room” (Mag:net Gallery, 2006), Theatre of Disguise (Finale Gallery, 2008) and Points of Departure (Noestudio, 2013 Madrid, Spain), Hablon Redux and Other Transcriptions (Random Parts, Oakland, USA, 2016).

Gerardo Tan was conferred the 13 Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1988. His other distinctions include the Fulbright-Hays Grant at SUNY Buffalo (1990-92), the Barbara Schuller’s Art Associates Award in Buffalo, NY (1992) and the Juror’s Choice at the Art Association of the Philippines Annual Competition in 1997.

Gerardo Tan took his MFA at the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA, and his BFA at the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus. He lives and works in Quezon City, Metro Manila.
