BIOGRAPHY
Pablo Milicua was born in Bilbao in 1960, where he studied arts in the eighties. In his beginnings in the Basque Country, he had a strong influence from comics and surrealism, later developing a personal workaround sculpture with the use of accumulation and mosaique using decorative pottery in a process of destruction and creation.
With these works, Milicua made his first exhibitions in Bilbao, Vitoria, Madrid, and Barcelona and won prizes and grants (Diputación Foral de Álava, Basque Government, Ayuntamiento de Vitoria, Spanish Academy in Rome) Later came his pictorial work with collage and his installations around the idea of the cultural landscape and ephemeral museum. In this context, he curated exhibitions like Mutantes del Paraíso, Sala Amárica, Vitoria 1998, Museo Efímero de Bilbao, Windsor Kulturgintza, Bilbao 2011 and El Prodigi, Artur Ramón Art, Barcelona 2015. His last personal shows are Milicua Retrocámara, Palacio de Quintanar, Segovia 2018, Valencia Milicua Museum 2018, Paisajes, Visiones, Apariciones, Galería Luis Burgos, Madrid 2019, Alpentraum, Villa Waldberta, Feldafing, Munich 2020 and Dúo 2/5, Galería Nueva, Madrid 2021, this last two with Yolanda Tabanera.
My work deals with the gathering and transformation of cultural objects in a process of destruction and creation, archeology and alchemy. I use founded images and objects to construct new narratives in the realm of the fantastic and grotesque, opening new ways for representation of the surreal.
The works presented in the current show in Manila include Two Towers, one of my big scale collages, made out of black and white photographs cut off books printed in the middle of the past century. The high quantity of small papers build a big, surrealistic image of my imaginary world. These fantastic landscapes have a direct relation with the ones of Hyeronimus Bosch, Max Ernst and the Facteur Cheval, three of my artist heroes. The smaller collages include oil painting. One, entitled Cabezudo has a person with a grotesque head which has relation with the imaginary of Goya, and the Cabezudos (Bigheads) in Spanish feasts and folklore. Other (Lost garden ) represent a rainy garden and is a melancholic landscape. The third is an urban landscape, very cataclysmic. The building in the middle is the Picasso Theater, a cultural cathedral in the middle of this city of chaos.
