The Weather Bureau

The Weather Bureau is a social architecture and engineering conglomerate that designs propositionary structures and conditions in the idealized state of utopia.

BIOGRAPHY
The Weather Bureau build from seemingly failed plans of defunct totalitarian states and readapts and rehabilitates them in their ideal settings or rather in nowherelands in timeless stasis.
Founded in 2010 by Lena Cobangbang and Mike Crisostomo, who started collaborating as production designers and product stylists for ad virals, print, packaging designs and stage sceneries, their vision as The Weather Bureau is to picture essences of the ideal as inherently dictated by the constraints of the form, illustrating perhaps an ideology in plasticity.
The Weather Bureau’s initial project Experiments in Degree Zero had been exhibited in the previous space of Blanc at Makati and at Manila Contemporary. They had also been part of The Complete and Unabridged Part 2, one of such exhibits organized by King Kong Art Projects to commemorate Roberto Chabet’s 50 years of his art practice. This was held at Osage Gallery in Hong Kong in 2011.
The Weather Bureau had also been featured in the July/August issue of Pipeline magazine, a HK-based art magazine. In November 2013, they were selected for an art residency under San Art in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

Lena Cobangbang (b. 1976, Manila)  graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in Fine Arts. Her work is broad-ranging, moving across video, installation, and found objects to embroidery, cookery, performance and photography, obsessive-compulsive, and at turns celebratory and macabre. Integral to her art practice is doing collaborations with other artists, such as with Yasmin Sison under the created fictional identity as Alice and Lucinda; and currently with Mike Crisostomo as The Weather Bureau.
Apart from making art, she writes and works as a production designer. A part of the seminal artist collective Surrounded By Water, her art practice extends to doing art administration and exhibit organizing, having been a fellow at the 2008 HAO Summit for emerging artists, curator and art managers in Asia in Singapore in 2008, and recently completing an artist/curator research resi-dency exchange between Green Papaya Art Projects and Pekarna Magdalenske Mreze in Maribor, Slovenia in 2010. She is also part of the touring exhibit Bastards of Misrepresentation, curated by Manuel Ocampo, which has been held in Berlin, Hamburg, Bangkok and New York and the Manila Vice show in Sete, France.
In 2005, she was nominated for the 3rd Ateneo Art Awards. She received the Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award in 2006 and was one of the participating artists in the 2008 Singapore Biennale.

Mike Crisostomo (b.1975, Manila) studied Fine Arts at The University of The Philippines and was into corporate managerial work before doing production design and graphics designing which eventually lead to focusing on art whose themes revolve around sublimating Sci-Fi utopian/dystopian visions through painting and photography. He’s been exhibited in various local galleries, including a solo exhibit at Blanc in 2013  and at Post Gallery in 2015.
