BIOGRAPHY
Through a practice of questioning his own metaphysical relationship to the present, Zeus Bascon has become attuned to a variety of apparitions, leading him to create artworks charged with a personal narrative, layered with mysticism and the supernatural.
Zeus Bascon (b.1987 | Laguna, Philippines) graduated from the College of Commerce at the University of Santo Tomas in 2008 and since 2006 has built his art career through active participation in exhibitions.
His interdisciplinary practice involves the transmutation of form – extracting elements from past works and integrating them with new layers and presentation strategies in order to establish connections between the internal and external; the logistics of location; energies stored in time; and evidences of intuition. Crossing over other disciplines, such as film and fashion, lead him to further explore performative and costume works - focusing on the body, setting, materiality, movement, and labor in art production.
He has participated in residency programs such as Fictive Communities Asia: Koganecho Bazaar 2014 in Yokohama, Japan and Craft Taitung Creator Exchange Program in Taitung, Taiwan in June, 2019. In 2018, Bascon was a recipient of the Thirteen Artists Award, granted by the Cultural Centre of the Philippines.
"A choreography derived from a poem I arranged, from 12 words contributed by each of the participants of a workshop I conducted here in La Union. An exercise of introspection involving the processes of translation, transformation and transmutation - as part of my activities under the residency program, Emerging Islands. The participants were my self along with 11 student-members (12-24 years old) of an environmentalist organization LINK (Lupon ng mga Indibidwal na Nangangalaga ng Kalikasan) of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Bacnotan. Each word from the poem were translated to movement, captured on a 10sec timer shoot with the participants wearing the costume and selected Dead Masks, against a backdrop of a painting, which image was developed based on the name of the colors Clear Promise (blue), Sunny day (yellow) and Imagine Violet (purple).
Imagine Violet (Dead Mask: Camoi Miraflor) was recently exhibited in my solo exhibition in San Juan, La Union titled A Butterfly Is A Patient. The print which was titled with a poem, which the choregraphy was derived from, is a new work for this exhibition."
