“Same Burning Roof”
The common Filipino loves filling up spaces and is maximalist by nature. They love the clutter of things that means something to them - the ones with sentimental values and fond memories. In a typical Filipino household it is very common to see a collection of things that are not necessarily correlated but harmonizing with each other, and if placed in its rightful spot could be very pleasing to the eye.
“Same Burning Roof” is a two-man show by Carl Belda and Franz Vocalan. It explores the quick wit of a Man in a conundrum - a triage. The show depicts scenes from a burnt house and the things that a common Filipino would have chosen to save and prioritize given the circumstance or whatever the adrenaline rush dictates, important things and necessities, and sometimes religious icons with the intent to save the savior and a belief to be saved. The show is also a collection of sifted memories and sentiments and tales of experiences that one’s chosen to keep and perpetuate.

About the Artists.
Carlmel Bernard Belda (b. 1993) is a Filipino artist who has been an active member of the local art scene. Apart from receiving awards from local competitions, Belda has been consistently showcasing his works in various galleries around the metro through group exhibitions. Balancing with his studio practice, Belda also has had several years of art instruction experience.
Belda's works are culled from his childhood memory. Alludes to winning over an enemy be it foreign or alien, a warning not to be enslaved by money and materialism.
“Tungkol ang artwork ko sa mga bagay na kadalasan na mas una nating isinasalba sa oras ng kalamidad, una nating hinihingan ng kahilingan at pinapasalamatan sa araw-araw. Dito ay konektado kung gaano ka sagana ang ating kultura at paniniwala natin sa nasa itaas sa kabila ng anu mang pagsubok sa pang araw-araw.”
Franz "Nano" Vocalan (b. 1993) finished Bachelor of Fine Arts in University of Rizal System-Angono. He has been actively participating in group shows on several galleries in Metro Manila since 2011 and had 8 solo exhibitions.
Nano's works were noted for expressive marks and textures intensified by dripping and layering paints. Early in his career, his works were tagged as "comic surrealism" for its playful and nonsensical humor meant to "tickle the funny bone".
