“Chaotic Neutral”

The contrapunto ideas of Nicole Asares and Zuh Dai in Chaotic Neutral, a two-man exhibition, searches for order and balance in chaos. Both artists, hailing from Bohol, are navigating the fast-paced Manila and its urban sprawl that mirror their aspirations and perhaps their internal and external conflicts. The proposition of creating beauty from disarray is a recurring theme in art, a seemingly banal idea and yet it remains to be an essential aspect of living. Asares and Duh delve into the inherent contradictions of the world with enthusiasm, while acknowledging realities that are truthful to their individuality.

Employing intersecting and overlapping lines, Asares attempts to connect with her emotions when painting. The interplay of certain elements— splashes of colors, bold lines and textural strokes– illustrates her emotional connection that serves as an internalization of creativity and wisdom. She expresses flows and shifts that translate into textured lines meeting in various points, and eventually forming shapes and patterns. Her work, characterized by spontaneity and randomness, hints a sense of continuity despite the rigidity of lines, reiterating change and a non-linear approach to existence.

The subtlety in Dai’s work conveys unpredictability through her use of a medium that is delicate and has tendencies of breaking its form. The subtle shades and softer lines that shaped her abstraction manifest her intention to shift from making the viewers feel overwhelmed to becoming more serene and contemplative. Being comfortable with chaos signals her artistic impulse for personal growth in her early practice, while striving to extricate herself from the cyclic nature of both creating and introspecting.

The visual tension between Asares and Dai is neither chaotic nor neutral. Whether in the evident order of things or their opposing viewpoints, their sensibilities speak of unison and prompt one to understand beauty not as a complex concept but rather as a human experience.
