Furnace Room

Modeka Art is proud to present the 2-man exhibition entitled “Furnace Room”, featuring visual artists Jay Francisco and Raise Hell.

“Furnace Room” is an exhibition about burning things of the past and using art as a ritual to reforge negative experiences into something new. Inspired by the natural cycle of forest fires, “Furnace Room” is more than just about turning a new page. It is about acceptance and forgiveness after the hells of the past, thus allowing oneself to create room for positive change.

We entered the year 2020 with a series of unfortunate events unraveling one after the other, starting off with news spreading about the historic Australian bushfires. More than 42 million acres were burned in an unprecedented outbreak of extreme fires, and many were left to face the extreme challenges of rehabilitation. It would be expected for one to fear the devastating effects of this catastrophe.

Though it is easy to say that this man-made disaster is formidable, it should also be known that wildfires are natural phenomena and can, in fact, be rather beneficial to our ecosystem. Because of this, certain species of plants and animals have evolved to depend on periodic and natural-causing wildfires for ecological balance.

Jay Francisco and Raise Hell embark on a journey to revisit remnants of the past in order to examine the after-effects of the adversities they were subjected to. Located at the loft space, the exhibition “Furnace Room” imbibes a warm enclave of by-products of self-recognition and exultance. Reimagined through visions derivative of restitution and atonement, the unambiguous displays of colorful painted illustrations substantiate the artists’ recognition of new growth and hope.

“FURNACE ROOM” is on view from December 18, 2021.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

This series of paintings by Jay Francisco is inspired by branching out of his comfort zone, personally and artistically. His main focus is to encourage growth and abundance in his works and other aspects of his life, and for real growth to take place, burning bridges is inevitable.

Raise Hell is a local illustrator and graphic designer known for her Lowbrow art style, which transcends all her illustrations, paintings, clothing, and accessory design, skateboard deck art, and some murals. Her visual flavor is a colorful palette, mixed with punk and pop-art-inspired graphics: from skulls, eyeballs, monsters, repetition, patterns, retro comic-inspired characters, and cartoons.

Her visuals exude strong female imagery, pop art, and patterns inspired by rage, anger, and a love for music. Such intense themes are channeled through her art, where she adapts and finds ways to better grasp certain realities of everyday life.

She built her reputation and experience in many disciplines – from designing local gig posters and album art (since 2007), devoting fourteen years to being a Senior Art Director for one of the country’s largest ad agencies, collaborating with homegrown and global brands, to joining multiple local exhibitions.

The series depicts the artist’s own vicious cycle of self-destruction. A prison spawned from overthinking and internal struggle. A loop that always comes in stages: the damaging mood swings, the self-acceptance, the recovery from beating up one’s self. And it’s this self-made trap that she needs to escape – a personal hell that needs to be released and repurposed. Because she will always be her own worst enemy. So might as well fight to win.
