“I Woke Up Like This”.

There is an undefinable languor when one wakes up. The irresistible call of sleep, battling with the invigorating anticipation of what lies ahead. Halfway between dreams and life, a transition amongst glimpses of what could have been, what we wish were the case, and the reality of what is.

In some twisted sense, the digital age brought netizens closer to each other, much like the Truman show or Big Brother. It has become acceptable - almost - to be voyeurs in one another’s lives. Influencers share the most private moments, social media personalities outdo each other to think of the most outrageously intimate tidbits to disclose.

It has come to the point where one’s waking up is no longer a personal moment to treasure, but rather, a public celebration of being. Of existing. Of being alive in this digitally connected world.

Naturally there are those who wish to show-off. To pretend as if their skillfully made-up faces were au naturelle. No effort in perfection, no unnatural sprawling of limbs to ruin their poise, no scrunched-up skin to mar their faces.

Others, however, display the complete opposite, the happy imperfections, all the better to laugh at themselves without fear of scorn or rebuke. They project a more joyous state of being, to be careless so they can be carefree.

Every second, every moment, one of us wakes up. And that instant will never be replicated again.

The seven artists harnessed for this show explore the many facets of that infinitely-occurring but never-duplicated moment. Each has his or her take on that singularity. A definition of that split-second.

Eugene Dominguez takes it quite literally. His diptych is a hyper-snapshot - first, of what seems to be a self-portrait, yet the diametrically opposed second canvass is more an idyllic projection of the idealized universe, where Edward Hooper might very well laze with his canine best friend.
Ryan Uy captures his subject through a window, as if still very conscious of that personal space, that gap between him and his subject. A divide he thoughtfully respects.
John Francis Andres still harks to the nightmares and dreams that chase sleep, as if the act of waking up does not entirely dispel the beasts. In fact, it as if those fearsome creatures manage to drag the sleeper back to the night kingdom.
So too Jay-R Delleva, who depicts false awakenings, those moments when one think is awake, only to realize that this moment is just another dream.
Daniel Carlos Bermas offers a look at the world through the eyes of babes. His charcoal tots wake up to the wonders that the world offers, whilst we wonder at the innocence that is captured so easily by this talented artist.
Not so Thom Jopson, whose canvasses progress through sunrise to mid-morning, as his faerie beings arise from the stillness of dawn, to then celebrate in shattered, multi-dimensional orgiastic festivities.
Katarina Estrada thinks in terms of couple hood. In her triple offering of pen-and-ink works, she depicts the intertwining of lovers locked in slumber. Her lush strokes capture a contortion of limbs, of the very real sensation we sometimes receive that there is more than just two people on the bed.
We rub our eyes, and blink in the waking moments. What a day to look forward to. But wait. Is this just another dream?

About the Artists.

Carlos Daniel Bermas

Carlos Daniel Bermas (2000) or “Sais” as how he represents himself, is an artist and a student from Technological University of the Philippines-Manila. He currently resides at Cavite. He pursued his passion in art by creating surreal subjects as his inspirations. Works were randomly inspired with his thoughts, questions, and reflections from different contexts.
“My works are constant explorations on how I explicate ideas to my audience. These vary from my failures, achievements and experimentations. On a daily basis, I always ask myself on how I can portray a concept in which audience can easily relate and anticipate. I stand in my belief that complexity of ideas can be simplified through art. Should I give myself a good get-up?

Should I be happy? Should I be inspiring? or should I be just myself?”
"Who Am I Today" is a series of representations of how a certain individual present him/herself to the society. These may vary depending on how he/she deals with the environment, how society affects his/her behaviour, and/or just how he feels about him/herself.

Eugene Dominguez

Born in Calumpang Binangonan Rizal 1996, Graduated in University of Rizal System, Angono Campus.
My obra is primarily concerned with the things around us that allow us to relax calmly and peacefully. As of now, because I'm still developing and discovering my painting potential, I'd like to concentrate on the things that I constantly observe around me. I want to do more painting practice because it will help me learn how to keep the proportions of the body correct in my concept and explore different color combinations that will give people an idea of what the painting is conveying just by looking at its colors. In addition, I want to focus more on my paintings of people resting peacefully, so that people can feel it by looking at these.

I know in my heart that all I need is more knowledge and practice to perform or create more paintings that will inspire others by the meaning of my concepts. I will use my abilities to expand or improve on my concepts or ideas for creating meaningful obras.

Jay-r Delleva

Jay-R Delleva is an artist from Bacolod City. He graduated from La Consolacion College with a degree in Fine Arts, major in Painting.
Delleva’s career as an artist has gained him nationwide recognition. Since 2004, he has been receiving awards from numerous corporate competitions, and has mounted solo and group exhibits. Among his recognitions are semi-final awards in MADE for the years 2006 and 2010, finalist and third places in the Shell National Students Art Competition (Watercolor and Sculpture Category, respectively), and he was a finalist in the PLDT/DPC Visual Arts National Competition.

John Francis Andres

John Francis Andres (b. 1984) is a self-taught visual artist based in Manila. He finished his studies at the Philippine Christian University with a BSBA majoring in Management. His work is an observation of life and personal experiences depicted in pop and surreal art.
His artworks are about lucid dreams where the person is in a state of it but it turns out to be a nightmare. When the person is about to wake up, he suddenly becomes aware that his body can't move (sleep paralysis).

Katarina Estrada

In her love affair with line, Katarina Estrada (b. 1989) examines the ephemera of everyday life, spirituality in philosophy, the human form and consciousness, and shadows and spaces. Her exploration of translating three-dimensional subjects onto two-dimensional surfaces yields drawings that curve outwards and sink backwards against the flat plane of the paper. She layers linework to convey volume, investigating with every stroke. While she continues to seek swelling, elongated, compressed forms, she also captures a contemporary vernacular. Estrada renders images that subtly provide equal parts social and political commentary, and these drawings aren’t just ruses but rather all-too-truthful snapshots of something broken that’s grappling for meaning and rest. Estrada’s sharp, carved lines are effortlessly weighted and considered —the result of careful, rigorous training as much as their graphic inspiration. Her overlaid lines are simultaneously organic and intensely graphic. One can imagine her eyes honing in like microscopes so that every line and mark of her pen acts as an energetic, engaging bridge between the analytical and visual worlds.

Katarina Estrada is a Filipino visual artist from Bacolod who is currently based in Metro Manila. She works primarily in pen and ink using fine cross hatching techniques, citing Rene Magritte, Edward Hopper, Francis Bacon, and Agnes Martin as her favorite artists. She was part of “OverLab Cycle Series”, an exchange residency program for artists based from Gwangju, South Korea and Bacolod, Philippines. Estrada has participated in various exhibitions across notable galleries such as Ysobel Art Gallery, White Walls Gallery, Galerie Roberto and was included in Art Fair Philippines 2020-2022 under various galleries.

Ryan Uy

Ryan Uy is a self-taught visual artist from the Philippines who discovered his love for painting at age 9. He left his successful career in the corporate world in 2017 to pursue his passion for creating art.
Some of Ryan’s earlier works were watercolor illustrations that evoked a childlike, carefree spirit. He later transitioned to oil pastels and acrylic, and created more dynamic abstract and geometric pieces that displayed a unique juxtaposition of colors. His first sold-out online exhibit in 2020, Nothing is the Same Again, showed a more mature and thoughtful artist. The pieces were a visual narrative of his personal experiences and struggles, which used paper cranes as an allegory to express longing. The result was a collection that is both poignant and profound.

Over the course of his career, Ryan has continued to experiment on different techniques, eventually finding a style and voice that is uniquely his. He is currently known for creating pieces with mechanical precision that, from afar, one would assume they were made digitally. That, perhaps, is the beauty of a Ryan Uy piece. Its uniqueness catches your attention from a distance, but upon closer inspection, you see [and maybe feel] the passion, dedication, and painstaking process of which it was created. And when you hear the story behind the piece, you learn to appreciate the art and the artist even more.
His artworks depicts someone who wants to shield himself with all the trauma one's endured and create a space where he can call his own.

Thom Jopson

Thom Jopson (B. 1990) is an artist from General Santos and grew up in Tacloban. Has attended college in The University Of The Philippines taking up Fine Arts Painting.

My Art tries to explore the visual language of sex, life, Orgasm and loneliness. I'm am a avid fan of surrealism, magic realism, dadaism and several artsy films. The semi realistically done figures of women are cropped to show the tightness of certain scenes. Lighting is very important to me and so I try to focus on that before thinking of other elements on the painting. The artworks are my way of purging my thoughts. I tend to overthink and painting helps me organize my emotions and inner voices. I love overlapping cartoonish figures over or under semi realistic figures. I tend to over saturate my canvas with many characters. Characters that either represent an actual person who I consider important or represent an abstract emotion or Concept.
