“Shelf-stable”
Since the early 1900s, non-perishable goods have become one of the most convenient and essential food items to purchase and consume. Its effective preservation provides a shelf life that can last years without spoiling and can withstand room temperatures without the need for refrigeration. In order to obtain its longevity, these shelf-stable items contain crucial ingredients that safely conserve their contents. Though seen as an everyday object for many, the idea of non-perishable goods inspired a movement of self-discovery for artist Bea Aspiras.
In her solo exhibition entitled “Shelf-stable”, Aspiras shares her outlook on finding stability within one’s self through a collection of paintings that assemble a visual diary. Each collection represents significant events from Aspiras’ life which are, in the artist’s words, “the ingredients that have led to me being shelf-stable”.
INGREDIENTS: Aspiras’ time living in Vancouver to study painting, memories of learning abstract art from a peculiar art teacher in elementary school, the dark and rather lonely period of year-long lockdowns, and the effects of solitude during the pandemic, the tranquil and almost hypnotic state of driving to a location for traveling, her studio in Canada which served as a place that solidified her passion and calling as an artist, a near-death experience during a residency in Siargao, and discovering her sense of independence living alone for the first time.
As part of her artistic practice, it is integral for Aspiras to share her life stories through her paintings, with the intention of reaching out to her audience with a meaningful message. It is through these significant events where Aspiras has gained steadiness within herself, thus securing her longevity as both an artist and a living being. “Shelf-stable” is an exhibit about finding the ingredients that will preserve one’s spirit for a long time.

About the artists.
Bea Aspiras
Bea Aspiras (b. 1993) is a painter based in Quezon City. She studied painting at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, OCAD University in Toronto, and Langara College in Vancouver.
Seeking to encapsulate the highs and lows of daily life while staying true to the spontaneity of her intuition while creating, it was during her time in Canada when she discovered her affinity for abstract expressionism. Completely falling in love with its raw artistic process.
Because of her sincerity for introspection and eagerness to learn, she paints to explore the individual subjectivity of human perception, sensibilities, and emotions. Bea takes inspiration from the stories she accumulates from her unending pursuit to connect with people through art.
