Worth of Things.

The Secret Life of Objects.

In this two-artist exhibition, The Worth of Things, Bembol Dela Cruz and Ranelle Dial delve into the significance of objects, not only as tools to make life governable, but as powerful signifiers of identity of those who use them, as if self and stuff were inextricably linked. Just imagine some possessions that are worn-out and have more than served their function, but for one reason or another, it is difficult to throw them away. By discarding them, it is as if a fundamental part of us would belost, irrecoverable forever.

In the works of Dela Cruz, the objects depicted are those that readily convey the personalities of those who use them. Fencing and boxing gloves represent athletes who have committed their lives to a sport. The worn-out leather suitcase suggests an individual whose livelihood entails extensive traveling. The pair of boots, seen in different blue-collar professions as well as the military, expresses the dignified stance of the wearer who sees the value of hard work. Such objects may be considered as a metonymic—visual short-hand of the type of people who own them.

Aside from whatever representation that these objects render, they are also beautiful. In this use-and-discard society, in which most objects we own are manufactured by tireless machines, there is something that is still radically evocative with a hand-made thing. The objects in the still lifes of Dela Cruz have that quality. Despite showing wear and tear, the battered leather of the punching speed bag or the suitcase gleams with a seductive veneer, as if constant use had inflIcted them with character that no machine-made object could ever have.

Which makes the act of conservation all the more important—a theme that is pursued by the suite of works by Dial. In these paintings, an expert commits to the stages of the restoration of a book—from checking out its condition under a microscope to assessing the individual pages to repairing the spine. Such devoted attention makes it appear that the book a holy object, which it is, considering its wealth of knowledge and its role in the propagation of belief. While book restoration seems like an arcane activity, with the world’s speedy move toward digitalization, it is rooted in the significance of material culture in history, how certain objects bear vivid narratives of time past.

The Worth of Things seeks not to fetishize objects but to underscore how they are vessels that carry individual and collective identities as well as biographical and historical archives. They are there not only to ornament our bodies and our spaces (although there is nothing wrong with this function) but also to facilitate our negotiations with the world, speaking profoundly on our behalf about our desires, fears, and aspirations. The paintings of Dela Cruz and Dial, extended by the installation in the gallery, argue that for some things activated and beloved by human presence, their worth is immeasurable.

About the Artists.

Bembol dela Cruz is a Filipino contemporary artist who holds a degree in Fine Arts (major Painting) from the University of the Philippines Diliman. He has had numerous solo shows in notable galleries in Metro Manila. He is a recipient of various awards including the 8th Ateneo Art Awards and received an artist residency and exhibition grant at Liverpool Hope University and the Cornerstone Gallery in the United Kingdom. He also received two residency grants from the Berkshire Residency Exchange in West Massachusetts and the Art of OMI International Artists Residency in Ghent, New York.

As much as art is often perceived as a way of detachment from reality, a key to unlocking some hidden meaning in the world that surrounds us, certain genres like hyperrealism blurs the line between reality and art and is practically erased in paintings and sculptures. Filipino contemporary artist, Bembol dela Cruz, focuses on stylized hyperrealistic paintings as an effective advancement of his ideas. As he develops ways to include a narrative, charm, and emotion into his work, he never leaves it bereft of personality.

Dela Cruz is captivated by the concept of tattoos and various surfaces such as skin and signs. He takes it a step further and creates a more definitive and detailed rendering to arrive at a different pictorial design. While incorporating elements that might not be there in reality, he consciously allows for a softer and much more complex focus on the depicted subject to create an illusion of new reality not seen in his original references. He may be intentionally veering away from being surreal, but his displayed illusions still encapsulate depictions of reality subtly enhanced with a fresh layer of vision.

"In my work path, there is a strand, which correlates the concept of time, restraint, processing and cognition.

Throughout the memory of existence, I am fascinated with man’s capability to abandon or adapt within the parameters of particular life, concept and space. Upon observing family, friends, the news and the paths that people take within our society, I am emphatic to a particular subjective concept of time, change, preservation and its relationship to the objective sense of adaptability and technology.

While I use a variety of materials and processes in each of my projects, my methodology is consistent. Although there are may not always be material similarities between the different projects, they are linked by recurring formal concerns and through subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the form of the work. Each project consists of multiple works, in a range of different media- paintings, assemblage and installation around specific themes and meanings. During research and production, new areas arise and lead to new body of work."
