Artist Focus:

Dedy Sufriadi

The colorful artworks by Ronald, rendered in his unique style, borrow from current pop culture, and often contain interesting takes on very recognizable icons, often subtle critiques about human nature as observed by the artist.
Ronald sees a certain truth in rudimentary drawings and paintings created by children and is often in awe of the colors and lines expressed by them. This observation has become an inspiration for the artist in his own paintings, creating his own fantastical scenes elicited from the innocent imaginative creations of children.

What are the usual themes in your work?

I love reading books--mostly about art and philosophy, and the majority of the themes in my paintings are inspired by the books I read.

Tell us about your latest project/s or anything you are currently working on.

Recently I have been working on a lot of art installations. The latest projects were a 12-meter concrete-cast TV and a wall made of 16,000 books.

How do you study or research for a project?

Many of my paintings and art installations are made without long study or research. The Ideas can come from anywhere: books, movies, or music. I would normally create a sketch first. But the end result is not always 100% the same as the initial sketch.

What are the processes involved in your art-making?

Everything starts from a simple sketch. For my installations, I normally produce a smaller study first, and when I feel good about it, I will create the bigger piece.

When working for an exhibition, how do you know which work to include?

I usually create several artworks, but I end up choosing only a few that I believe are the best -- I would always try to get the opinion of other artists and people involved before choosing which artwork to include.

Name some of the artists who have influenced you in your practice.

I really like the work of Basquiat and Jim Dine. But i'm not Basquiat or Jim Dine ☺ ☺
