While Mark is a celebrated photographer in the Philippines, his artistic practice goes beyond the lens and traverses into painting and sculptural works.
After over a decade of success in photography, what made you decide to come full circle and finally explore your passion for art?
When i realised I was ready (after 16 years) and i actually have something to show and be proud of.
What's the most challenging aspect of sculpture that pushed you to re-visit the practice?
It's the whole process of discovery - sculpture came up to me before i even knew it It started when I collected rocks that can shaven. I started carving using knives and sharp objects when I was young - i didn't have toys so i made my own. I loved drawing but there's something about carving and creating something out of simple things you see around... I thought it was cool because no one was doing it and it made me feel like I was doing something special just for me and no one else. Right now though I would say I'm regressing.
Tell us about your work for this exhibition with Modeka.
I've been working on this for months. It started with wires that that I molded as the skeletal part then i covered it clay - just to have the freedom of movement, and actually to pick the perfect movement and moment. I started making molds using silicon and plaster, experimented with materials ( fiber glass, metals, broken glass and recyclable found objects). I dont know why but I'm just following my instincts and the process I wanted to do and explore. As of now, I'm going to visit a place where chrome is processed.
Where do you draw your influences from in making sculptural works?
My friends and people close to me. The classic and the modern will always be in the alleys of my concious and subconcious mind and of course photography and my process on it.
Where do you see yourself now as an artist?
Sitting by my beachfront studio window, finishing new paintings and sculptures, experimenting with new materials and shooting (photograph) more people and directing a full length film and music videos. Maybe collaborating with galleries in EU or US.🏽
